What is Lesson Study?
Lesson study is a scientific research based approach to learning about teaching. Researchers begin with an authentic problem or goal that they want to address in their classroom. This can be anything from “how can I increase students’ confidence so they will participate effectively in small group discussions” to “how do I support students in developing critical consciousness in a Physics classroom?”
Next, researchers dive into the existing research on the topic in order to learn more about what has been attempted in the past. This research helps the lesson study team to develop a plan to implement in their classrooms. During the lesson, data is collected so that the team may analyze whether the methods and strategies that they implemented were effective in increasing student confidence or developing critical consciousness.
Lesson study is an opportunity to collaborate with other professionals and access the brilliance of other teacher researchers who have grappled with the same questions in the past.
